Vazhaipoo/Banana Flower Usli

Anything made with vazhaipoo usually takes time, so it is best done when one has time in hand. This usli can also me made into vadai, but shaping them into vada shapes and frying instead of stir frying the entire thing.

This is what you need:

Vazhaipoo - 1
Bengal gram/Channa dal - 1/2 cup
Tuvar Dal - 1/2 cup
Dry red chillies - 5-6 no.s
Saunf/Sombhu - 1 tsp
Cumin/Jeeragam - 1 tsp
Small onions - a handful
Rock salt - as required.

This is what you do:

Remove the flower completely by taking them from inbetween the red skin, and removing the black stem. Coarsely chop the small onions. Let both the dals soak for 45 minutes.

Now grind the red chillies, saunf, cumin and rock salt first. Then to this add the soaked dal. Grind the coarsely and not too fine. Now finally add the vazhaipoo and grind for 2 swings. Mix this coarsely ground mixture with the small onions.

Heat some oil in a pan, Now add the ground mixture and stir them till they turn brown. It will absorb more oil.

Instead of stir frying them, you can shape the ground mixture into vadas and fry them in oil.
